Any of several herons with long feathers on
the head or neck. The great white egret
Egretta alba of SE Europe and other parts of
the Old World, which grows to a length of 1
m/3 ft, develops snowy-white plumes, formerly
used for hat ornaments. The little egret
Egretta garzetta, 0.6 m/2 ft, is found in
Asia, Africa, S Europe and Australia. The
snowy egret Egretta thula of North America,
about 60 cm/2 ft long, was almost hunted to
extinction for its graceful plumes before the
practice was made illegal. The little egret
E. garzetta 60 cm/2 ft long, is found in
Asia, Africa, S Europe, and Australia.
